How to automate running a tournament: timer, blinds, seating, and calculations

From the outside, a sport poker tournament looks simple: players sit down, play, and someone wins. On the inside, it’s a sequence of clear steps — from the blind structure to the final standings. Let’s walk through the whole process in order and show what the floor does by hand and what the platform takes over.

The tournament step by step

  1. 1
Create the tournamentThe organizer sets the foundation: the format (freezeout, re-entry, knockout, and so on), the blind structure, the level length, and a starting chip stack that is the same for everyone. The structure sets the pace: the shorter the levels and the faster the blinds rise, the more dynamic the tournament.
  2. 2
Open registrationPlayers sign up in advance or on site. Registration shows how many tables and entrants there will be, and late registration (if the format allows it) lets players join during the first levels.
  3. 3
Seat the playersBefore the start, entrants are assigned to tables and seats. Seating should be even and random, so that every table has roughly the same number of players — the principles are covered in our article on table seating and balancing.
  4. 4
Start the level timerA tournament runs in levels: every few minutes, the blinds go up according to the set structure. One timer keeps all tables in sync — players see the current level, the blinds, and the time until the next increase.
  5. 5
Manage levels and breaksBreaks kick in between levels on schedule. When needed, the organizer can pause the tournament — for an announcement or to sort out a disputed situation, for example — and then resume from the same point.
  6. 6
Balance the tablesAs players are eliminated, tables are merged and seating is evened out so that the load stays equal. When only a few entrants remain, the tables are consolidated into one — the final table.
  7. 7
Record eliminationsEvery elimination is recorded: the eliminated player takes the corresponding place in the final standings, which fill from the bottom up. In knockout formats, the opponents each player eliminates are counted separately.
  8. 8
Final table, final standings, and ratingThe final table decides the prize places. Complete tournament standings are then compiled, and every entrant receives rating points based on their finishing place.

What the floor does and what the platform does

When a tournament is run by hand, the organizer is referee, timer, and calculator all at once. The platform takes the calculations and routine off their plate and leaves the person with what requires being present and making decisions.

It helps to put the shared timer and tournament status on a common screen in the room — that ends the endless “what level are we on?” and “how long until the break?” questions. We explain how this works in our article on the poker club TV display.

“A good tournament is one where the floor is busy with players, not with recalculating blinds and seating.”

Where an organizer should start

For a tournament to run smoothly, all you need is to plan the blind structure and level length in advance, open registration a few days ahead, and get the room ready. Everything else — the timer, seating, balancing, and rating — you can leave to the platform. To learn why a club needs a single tool, read our overview of a poker club platform.

Frequently asked questions

Where does organizing a poker tournament start?

With creating the tournament: the organizer chooses the format and sets the blind structure, the level length, and an equal starting stack, then opens player registration.

What is a blind structure?

It’s the schedule for raising the blinds, the mandatory forced bets, from one tournament level to the next. The shorter the levels and the faster the blinds go up, the more dynamic the game. The structure is set in advance and is the same for all tables.

How are tables balanced during a tournament?

As players are eliminated, tables are merged and seating is evened out so that every table has roughly the same number of entrants. By the final, the tables are consolidated into one.

What does the platform do, and what is left to the floor?

The platform handles the timer, seating, balancing, final standings, and rating. The floor takes care of disputed situations, order in the room, supervising dealers, and communicating with players.

How is the rating awarded after a tournament?

After the final, complete standings are compiled, and every entrant receives points based on their finishing place. The calculation is automatic and feeds into both the club and overall ratings.
